We blame The Beards for this
When The Beards first stepped up onto the national stage with their hirsute appearance and laundry list of songs about the benefits of facial hair, we couldn't have possibly imagined that the ostensible joke movement would give rise to a growing cabal of bands all being themed around weirdly specific objects.
Indeed, following in The Beards' obsessive footsteps are not only Melburnian 'BBQ punk' luminaries The Burnt Sausages, but Brisbane 'cig-pop' crew The Durries, who somehow have enough opinions about ye olde humble deathsticks that they've managed to pull together an entire EP of 'em, We Build Schools (available via Bedlam Records).
As a sampler, the band have just unveiled the new video clip for their track Marlboro Gold, which features the band cross-dressing, pullin' cones and punchin' darts, and makes a fitting addition to their wider catalogue, presently filled with song titles such as Lucky Strike, Winnie Blues, Camel and BnH Smooth.
The real surprise, though, comes with the fact that the songs are actually perfectly competent compositions, with Marlboro Gold even getting loose with some noodly, fuzzed-out guitar solo work as a much-needed musical smoko break partway through the unrelenting assault of the rest of the piece.
