Last month, Spiderbait put out a call-out for recommendations of local female and gender-diverse artists to open for their Ivy & the Big Apples 30th-anniversary tour.

City by city, town by town, the band asked locals: who should Janet English be listening to? Who should join Spiderbait and a rotating line-up of special guests, which includes Magic Dirt, Custard, The Meanies and others, on their upcoming tour?

The response was swift and passionate, and now, Spiderbait have revealed who’s joining the shows. The acts opening each gig are:

Brisbane (4 July) – VOIID

Brisbane (5 July) – ViperSnatch

Perth – Blush

Shoal Bay – Exsister

Bateau Bay – Butterknife

Miranda – Private Wives

Melbourne (23 July) – My Guardian Angel

Melbourne (24 July) – Hot Milk Machine

Adelaide – Rosie and the Posies

Canberra – Box Dye

Sydney – Private Wives

Newcastle – Butterknife

Taking to social media today, Spiderbait shared their delight at having an incredible array of artists join them on tour.

“A massive thank you to the incredible music communities around Australia who flooded us with recommendations after we put the call out,” they wrote.

They continued, “The response was overwhelming. There is so much talent out there, and a great reminder of how strong, diverse and exciting the Australian music scene is right now.

“Joining an already stacked lineup, we’re stoked to welcome an incredible group of artists to open these shows around the country. Choosing wasn’t easy, but we couldn’t be more excited to share these artists with you.

“Get there early, give them a huge welcome.”

In late June, Spiderbait commented on the massive response to their call-out for female and gender-diverse acts to join them on tour. They explained that the sense of community – people championing their mates – was very special to them.

The band added that they chose to spotlight female and gender-diverse acts because “representation matters.”

“When we started out, music spaces were often overwhelmingly male. Things have changed, but there’s still work to do,” they continued.

Spiderbait said that their call-out showed “just how much incredible talent” can be found across Australia. And, they added, if nothing else, their comment sections had become “a pretty bloody good directory of amazing female and gender-diverse artists from every corner of the country.”

They concluded the post, “Keep discovering them. Keep supporting them. Keep making noise about music.”

Spiderbait’s Ivy & the Big Apples 30th anniversary tour begins this weekend, with a massive back-to-back run of shows at Brisbane’s The Tivoli. The tour continues in Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Sydney, Newcastle, Shoal Bay, Bateau Bay, and Miranda.

Four shows are sold out, with limited tickets remaining for all other shows. You can find tickets on the Frontier Touring website.
