"A rather obscurely worded song; largely about smoking weed, I think from memory."
Steve Parkin's Gallery Sessions show with Davey Cradock tonight at the Fremantle Arts Centre will be the last as he brings his solo career to an end. He chose five songs to share with us from his back catalogue, along with some insights.
"A band I formed with two members of Burnside, Hugh and Jayde. This EP scored us four stars in Rolling Stone, and got played on radio heaps! Definitely springing from a huge Beatles phase we were going through. The title was taken from a Sylvia Plath poem, Lady Lazarus."
"The first song I ever had played on triple j in 1995-96. We were incredibly excited to hear it on (then Richard Kingsmill's) Ausmusic Show. A rather obscurely worded song; largely about smoking weed, I think from memory. I was a very naughty boy back then!"

"My first solo LP, recorded with Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe) Andy Lawson (The Avenues) and Rodney Aravena (End of Fashion). Recorded in a South Freo shed... conveniently located next to Moondyne Joe's. From my (ongoing) Bowie phase. Break-up song (also an ongoing motif!) Toured this album around Oz with a bunch of my musical buddies, who called themselves The Foreign Films."
"A song I brought in and co-wrote with Kevin Mitchell, Josh Pyke and Kav Temperley for our 'folk-pop supergroup' Basement Birds. My attempt at finally writing an upbeat song of optimism! Happy days! We got an ARIA nomination and reached number 12 on the charts. And had a lot of fun."
"Was listening to a lot of late '70's MOR rock. Supertramp, The Cars, REO Speedwagon. Wanted to make a big shiny guitar pop record. Recorded with the guys from Eskimo Joe, on their record label Dirt Diamonds/Warner Music. My first and last major label release, my attempt at 'epic pop'."
"I put up a couple of kooky lo-fi releases through Bandcamp. This is from the last one. Going full circle, a song about being stoned and sailing through another breakup. Written while Sir David Attenborough was on TV talking about owls. Hence the title."
