Thousands Sign Petition For G Flip To Support Taylor Swift On 'Eras' Tour

After smashing out a banging cover of Cruel Summer for triple j’s Like A Version, G Flip has caught the attention of Taylor Swift’s ravenous fanbase – and they want the DRUMMER legend to open for their fave on the fast-approaching Aussie leg of the Eras tour.

Some context: last Friday (January 19), G Flip put their signature spin on Swift’s Lover hit for Like A Version, saying in a post-performance interview that they chose the cover because they consider it to be “one of the best pop songs ever written”.

They said of their personal relationship to Cruel Summer: “I feel like as a queer person, we’ve all gone through a summer where you’ve fallen in love with someone, and I like the story of it – and there’s a lot of queer Taylor Swift fans who would like me changing the lyrics a little bit”.

Shortly after the cover was posted online, Swift herself came across it, subtly showing her approval with a ‘like’ on Instagram. Flip naturally reacted with amazement, and during a later appearance on The Project, they agreed it was “100 percent” the most important like of their career. “I think it’s pretty funny that someone double-tapping on a screen has led me to be on the news right now,” they joked.

“But no, I idolise Taylor, I think she’s the artist of our generation and the best songwriter, and such an amazing businesswoman. And if it was her – like, it could have been someone from her team, I don’t know – but if it was her... I did that cover and I thought I was going to get so much hate, so I’m, like... I’ve been on cloud nine ever since. I can’t believe it.”

Now, Flip’s fanbase have united with Swift’s to petition a link-up for the latter’s upcoming Australian tour – and it all started with Flip’s very own mum. As they explained in a TikTok: “My mum was like, ‘G, why aren’t you opening for Taylor in Australia? Like, why not? Let’s just call your booking agent...’ And I said, ‘Mum, it’s not that easy!’ Then the next morning I woke up and my mum’s made a petition. She’s got only a few signatures, but I love the passion…”

When they posted the video on Saturday (January 20), Flip’s mum’s petition had just 123 signatures; at the time of writing, it’s since ballooned to nearly 17,000. A handful of the signees, too, have commented saying they discovered Flip from their Cruel Summer cover. “It would be an injustice if this doesn’t happen,” wrote one particularly determined fan named Tara.

As one fan named Claire put so beautifully, “[I] always thought a local opening act is important, especially on a mega-tour like this one. G is a fantastic role model [and] amazing artist and would whip the crowd up ready for Taylor. If not an opening act, a special on-stage guest surely.”

The local leg of the Eras tour kicks off in Melbourne (Naarm) on Friday February 16, with three shows booked at the Melbourne Cricket Grounds – the other two slated for Saturday February 17 and Sunday 18 – followed by a four-date stint at Accor Stadium in Sydney (Eora) running over February 23-26. Meanwhile, Flip made huge waves last year with the release of their second studio album, DRUMMER. The chart-topping record went on to win big at the 2023 ARIAs and J Awards, and even made it onto The Music’s list of last year’s best Australian albums – obviously the biggest accolade of them all, no contest.

In an interview with The Music, Flip said of how DRUMMER builds on the artistry explored on their 2019 debut: “When I made About Us, I felt like a kid. I was very much learning how to navigate the world and everything around me – and since then, I feel like I've matured so much. And I've matured in my artistry, and in my vocals and my songwriting and musicianship – even my stage presence. But you know, that’s just the passage of time; I think all of us grow and elevate in whatever field we're in. I just feel like a more matured version of myself now.”
