G Flip has taken home the 2023 J Award for Australian Album of The Year with their latest LP, DRUMMER.

Triple j announced the winners of this year’s awards on this morning’s Breakfast with Bryce & Conchetta show. As well as G Flip winning the coveted Australian Album of The Year, singer and rapper Miss Kaninna was crowned Unearthed Artist of The Year, SHABA won the Australian Music Video of The Year for 4K TO THE MIDDLE EAST [Ft. UZI] — directed by MOONBOY STUDIOS, Briggs was named the Double J Australian Artist of The Year, and Genesis Owusu was crowned the inaugural Live Act of The Year.

Citing Briggs’ socio-cultural impact over the last twelve months, Double J named him Australian Artist of The Year for curating Now & Forever – the follow-up to last year’s First & Forever event – in addition to releasing the A.B. Original track Yes and his viral advertisement for the Yes campaign.

Meanwhile, Genesis Owusu won the first-ever Live Act of The Year for a massive year of innovative, imaginative concerts. From Groovin’ The Moo to performing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, his presence has been felt throughout the Australian live circuit. And that’s all before he takes his new album, STRUGGLER, on the road this December.

G Flip’s new album, DRUMMER, debuted atop the ARIA Albums Chart in August. They also topped the Top Australian Artist and Vinyl Album Charts. Their previous album, About Us, debuted at #6 in 2019.

With DRUMMER, G Flip held off international competition in the Barbie The Album soundtrack, Taylor Swift’s 1989 and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), and Travis Scott’s Utopia.

“I feel like I've matured so much,” G Flip told The Music in a cover story interview earlier this year. “And I've matured in my artistry, and in my vocals and my songwriting and musicianship – even my stage presence. But you know, that’s just the passage of time; I think all of us grow and elevate in whatever field we're in. I just feel like a more matured version of myself now.”

G Flip is also one of the most-nominated artists at this week’s ARIA Awards, with Genesis Owusu at the top of the list with seven nominations. He told The Music in a cover story about his seven nods, “I feel like the Australian music landscape is in a pretty cool place if I can make an album about a roach running away from God, and it can be nominated for seven ARIAs – I think that's a good sign.”
