English comedian, writer and television personality Noel Fielding surprised Teen Jesus and the Jean TeasersJaida Stephenson with a sweet video message, offering to join the band and play the rhombus.

The moment took place on Spicks and Specks on Wednesday (2 September), after the bassist revealed that she and the band’s guitarist, Scarlett McKahey, are obsessed with The Mighty Boosh – the comedy troupe Fielding stars in with Julian Barratt.

Stephenson and McKahey’s obsession evolved into covering The Mighty Boosh’s Call of the Yeti, which Spicks and SpecksAdam Hills said he told Fielding about before playing the video message.

“Hello, Jaida. I’ve just heard your version of Call of the Yeti,” Fielding said in the video message. After quipping that his “lawyers will be in touch,” he said he was “deeply moved” by the cover and described it as “beautiful.”

Then, he asked if he could join the band. “I was wondering, can I join the band? Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers?” Stephenson is seen laughing before Fielding continued, “I feel like I’d be a positive boon. I could just stand at the back playing the triangle, or the rhombus?

“I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the sound a rhombus makes,” Fielding said. “It’s a sort of deeper, sexier, resonating sound, like a bullfrog in peril. Think about it.”

The video message concluded with Fielding saying he loves Stephenson “a little bit,” to her delighted laugh. She joked, “We’ve been looking for a rhombus player!”

Earlier this year, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers returned to triple j studios and covered the t.A.T.u. classic, All The Things She Said, for Like A Version.

Their return to Like A Version coincided with the release of the deluxe edition of their latest album, GLORY, which features the new tracks BATH WATER and GO WASTE MY TIME, and stripped back versions of four fan-favourite songs, TALKING, DAYLIGHT, MINE and WONDERFUL.

The band then embarked on a national tour in support of GLORY alongside special guests Darcie Haven, as well as local supports Sonic Reducer, Polly and Oscar the Wild. In New Zealand, they were joined by IVY. This week, they wrapped up a European headline tour.
