On Thursday (2 July), Ben Folds shared a short reel on social media, which he captioned “Loading…”. The video contains Polaroid photos from the band’s heyday, accompanied by the sound of a clicking camera. At the time of publication, no more information has been shared.
If they’re not reuniting, they could be gearing up to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their second album, Whatever and Ever Amen, which was released in March 1997. Perhaps anniversary celebrations have been locked in for 2027?
Ben Folds Five formed in 1993 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The band comprised lead singer and pianist Ben Folds, bassist and backing vocalist Robert Sledge, and drummer and backing vocalist Darren Jessee.
Recognised for their mainstream hit single, Brick, the group released three albums in the first seven years of their career. They also released a compilation of B-sides and outtakes, as well as eight singles.

After originally disbanding in 2000, Ben Folds Five reunited in 2011, released their fourth album, The Sound of the Life of the Mind, in 2012, and once again disbanded in 2013.
In 2023, the group reformed for a concert in tribute to Caleb Southern – the producer of the band’s first three albums and named the “fourth member” of Ben Folds Five – in Chapel Hill.
The members of Ben Folds Five have continued their careers despite the band’s disbandment. Ben Folds has released six solo albums, with his most recent record, Sleigher – a Christmas album – released in 2024.
After an epic run of sold-out shows earlier this year, Folds is again heading to Australia in October for a string of “Encore” shows on his Ben Folds And A Piano tour, which includes a performance for Night At The Barracks.
