Have you ever listened to a Primus performance and thought, “I could do that”? Well, now’s your chance, with the veteran rockers announcing a search for their new drummer.
Taking to Instagram, the band have launched an open call for auditions from anyone who thinks they have what it takes to sit behind the kit following the unexpected departure of longtime percussionist Tim ‘Herb’ Alexander.
Though Alexander was not a founding member of Primus, he is however considered part of their classic lineup alongside bassist/vocalist Les Claypool and guitarist Larry ‘Ler’ LaLonde.
Alexander played in Primus for three separate stints. After joining the band in 1989, he left for the first time in 1996 before rejoining in 2003 and departing for a second time in 2010. He returned to the band in 2013, remaining until the exit that has encessitated a search for the “greatest drummer on earth”.
“We are currently taking submissions from all points in the universe for the position of Primus drummer/percussionist,” Primus wrote on social media.
“Seeking a well-mannered, affable individual with original sensibility and aesthetic, possessing a desire to open new doors in the creative world,” they added. “Flashy chops are wonderful, but groove, pocket, and the ability to listen, react, and contribute to the musical conversation is a must.”

The search comes just weeks after the band announced on October 30th that Tim Alexander had emailed Primus earlier that month claiming he was leaving the group, “effective immediately.”
According to his bandmates, they attempted to communicate with Alexander on numerous occasions, and when they eventually received a response, he wrote that he had “lost his passion for drumming.” However disappointed the band is by the turn of events, they wrote that they respect his choice but, ultimately, had to make some tough decisions about what would come next.
Having initially considered cancelling their annual New Year’s Show, Claypool and LaLonde have since decided to host a version of the event with an “augmented version” of Primus with Holy Mackerel and Frog Brigade. They described the upcoming show as a “special, one-time event.”
Meanwhile, Primus’ upcoming Dominican Republic performance with Tool will feature the latter’s drummer pulling double-duty, with Danny Carey sitting behind the kit for both sets.
The search also bears resemblance to the Smashing Pumpkins, who announced Kiki Wong as their new guitarist after a public callout resulted in over 10,000 submissions from interested applicants.
