Matt Corby and Tame Impala are already two of Australia’s most revered, beloved musical acts. So, what happens when you put them together? Magic happens.

This morning, triple j unveiled the latest star to enter its studios for Like A Version. It’s Matt Corby taking on Tame Impala’s hit single, Dracula. Stripping the song back to its purest melodies and vocals, Corby strums his electric guitar while his soulful, effortless vocal provides a whole new flavour to the song.

Then, there are the stunning backing vocalists, swaying viewers with their hypnotic singing that accompanies Corby’s rich performance. The whole band that backs him is solid as ever, and when Corby stretches his vocal just that little bit higher and follows it up with a moving guitar solo, the track is elevated to a whole new level.

The Brother hitmaker also discussed his decision to cover Dracula. “I mean, it’s a great song, and it was definitely a challenge,” Corby said. “There’s lots of funny, tricky moments [that] until you break the song down, you don’t really hear. I guess it’s how clever Kevin [Parker] is.”

Adding that he misheard the original song’s lyric – “Run from the sunlight, Dracula” and instead sang the lyric he’s always heard, “Run from the sun like Dracula,” Corby then praised his band and their taste, which naturally helped them find their “Philly soul” take on the Tame Impala song.

While in the studio, Corby also performed one of his latest songs, War To Love, from his new album, Tragic Magic. You can watch the performances and the behind-the-scenes of his Like A Version interview below.

In July, Corby will be touring across Australia in support of Tragic Magic, where he’ll be joined by special guest Gretta Ray.

The tour has been met with incredible demand, with the soul music troubadour adding another night for especially keen fans in Melbourne back in April.

Tragic Magic has been described by Corby as a “deeply personal and soul-soaked collection” of music, highlighting a “new chapter” in his private life and artistry. Throughout the record, he played most of the instruments and co-produced every track.
