Video Premiere: Creature Fear - 'Sorbet'

After emerging from "an evolution-driven creative hiatus" in late 2023 with their anthem Adulthood, Creature Fear recently opened their 2024 account with the short, sharp and very sweet sounds of Sorbet - two minutes and fifteen seconds of driving, hook-filled indie rock with plenty of pop sensibilities.

Composed in what songwriter and vocalist Cameron Graham described as a “state of self-awareness and frustration. The song paints a picture of an unhealthy relationship with food, using it as a coping mechanism and the complications that surround it,” he continues. “While it was written in a way that’s somewhat ambiguous, ‘Sorbet’ expresses determination to break free from difficult patterns and persevere through mental health challenges, though at the same time expresses a lot of self doubt.”

Now the band are back with the single’s awesome visual accompaniment. Produced by two very talented women - directed by local artist Amy Pollock with Claire Giuffre as DOP / Gaffer - the ambitious music video was filmed with a single camera in a single take. Starring singer Louise Gaul with the rest of the band supporting, the music video channels the song’s meaning into film form as Louise explores a house, with the conclusion subverting expectations to great effect.

Amy explains "Cam and I developed the video concept together, following Louise through her monotonous daily routine as she attempts to make the people around her happy by placing sorbet in their hands and smiley masks on their faces. While the underlying themes come from a serious reality, we always seem to naturally find a Creature Fear twist to get the energy across in an unexpected way."

When it came to actually pulling off the shoot, Amy describes their authentic approach "I really wanted to lean into the authenticity and practical effects of what a one shot can highlight. We are living in a time where there are so many artificial effects which are added in the editing room, but I think there is something really beautiful about making things work practically in camera, on the day. We rehearsed quite a lot before we shot as we had a limited amount of sorbet and once we started shooting it felt like a well oiled machine."

Speaking on the experience, Cameron says "It’s always such a delight working with Amy, she really understands us and our humour and always finds a way to make some creative, quirky and entertaining videos on virtually no budget."
