It’s been a rapid rise for local electro-pop lads Sun City. Troy Mutton gets up to speed with half the duo in Tobias John, discussing their new EP and finding their festival stage feet.

"I’ve got like 26 preliminary tracks at the moment, which is heaps... It’s like there’s a massive party in my head and I just need to kick everyone out."

"We’ll definitely opt to take it to a more deeper side of things just because we love that European, cold, dark sound."

“I’ve always been a musician and I can’t even think about staying behind a laptop playing with a track pad.”

“And we were just thinking ‘Why don’t people respect this pop thing anymore? Why don’t people genuinely love it and try to use the same amount of imagination like these amazing alternative bands are doing?’ So we set ourselves that rule."

“Music doesn’t sell the way it used to at all. Even the biggest stars don’t sell that much. So the concept of writing an album and then selling it is kind of outdated.”

"It’s kind of funny, we haven’t played that many shows, but we’re really excited to come on tour because we feel like the live show is sounding amazing, and we can’t wait to play for people."

“There’s this sort of future jungle stuff... It is proper beats, less pedestrian and less like house."

I think the appeal I suppose is that it’s fairly fresh. I’ve heard a few people say there’s not too much else like us in Perth at the moment.

"Sometimes I have felt scorned and isolated."

“There’s a lot of people that are in bands and they’re not playing music, you know, they’re just playing somethin’ else; they’re playing someone else’s music."
