As Hoodoo Gurus gear up for their All Killer, No Filler national tour, they’ve announced a new live album.

Silk Purse – Live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra was recorded during the band’s historic show at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra back in January.

To celebrate the milestone, the band drops the live album on Friday, 4 December, via Big Time Records through Universal Music Australia. Fans can pre-order the album on vinyl and CD and pre-save it on streaming services. You can pre-order/pre-save the record here.

With Silk Purse, fans will experience Hoodoo Gurus classics like they’ve never heard before, including Bittersweet, 1000 Miles Away, Miss Freelove ’69, What’s My Scene, Come Anytime, Death Defying, My Girl, and more.

Apart from the hits, though, fans will also delight in hearing some deep cuts that haven’t been played in many years, or at all, such as The Wedding Song, The Stars Look Down, My Caravan, and Death Ship.

In line with today’s announcement, Hoodoo Gurus have released a wonderful live rendition of My Caravan, which you can check out below.

“We originally did this with a smaller ensemble, the Canberra Symphony in 2024,” frontman Dave Faulkner explained in a statement. “Unfortunately, there was a huge technical issue... This noise destroyed the whole recording across all the channels, so the tapes were unusable.”

When the band initially heard the tapes from their show with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, it was clear that they’d run into the same problem.

Admitting that they’d seemingly run into an “incredible obstacle,” Faulkner discussed feeling that it would be “impossible” to clean up the recordings in post-production.

However, they found an answer in the technology Peter Jackson’s team developed to clean up audio for The Beatles’ film, Get Back. “It wasn’t an AI instrument; it’s just that AI cleaned it up,” Faulkner said. “In the end, what you hear is what happened on the night."

He concluded, “We called it Silk Purse for a reason. We are the sow’s ear that’s been turned into a silk purse by this lovely orchestra. It’s not a rock record. It’s not a classical record. It’s just a record, and that’s kind of how I like it.”

Hoodoo Gurus’ Rewind Tour - All Killer No Filler run begins on Friday, 27 November, in Adelaide. The tour continues with stops in Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, Hobart, and Melbourne. The band will be joined by special guests Ratcat and The Stems at all shows. Tickets are now available via the Frontier Touring website.
