Transgender Dysphoria Blues rides the thin line between deep emotion and infectious punk-rock hooks. And it’s this precarious balance that makes it legitimately exciting in a way that studio gloss too often polishes away.

Yes, it’s all very ‘badass’ and ‘boundary-pushing’ – we get it. But once you peel back the veneer of that gimmick, you’re left with the equivalent of an air-horn blasting in your face.

Above all, Malkmus seems at peace with himself and his place in the overall scheme of things and keen to indulge in art for art’s sake – a noble (and irrefutably enjoyable) exercise for all involved.
