Hundreds of voices all chanting, “Bye, bye Miss American Pie”with McLean as choir leader was worth the ticket price alone.

As long as you don’t mind the art-to-bar ratio being more focused on the latter, the MCA’s monthly night still holds much to be enjoyed and admired and remains a great way to spend a night every few weeks.

A special shout-out does need to go to Joe Lindsay on the trombone, who did an amazing Miley Cyrus impersonation, ‘twerking’ his way around the stage non-stop and stripping down from his snug white suit to appear virtually naked by the end of the show!

Although the “perfect closing line” eludes Leggatt as Going Swimming close their set, perhaps the fact that he simultaneously thanks and abuses the crowd IS the perfect finish for this thoroughly enjoyable performance.

Ending on their cover of The Gun Club’s For The Love Of Ivy – no unnecessary encore – Japandroids left a remarkable impression at their first ever Sydney club show.

An easygoing and musically immaculate evening.
