No relation to Thor and his brother Miley Cyrus' fiancé, Canadian producer/DJ Ryan Hemsworth sure knows how to create a buzz. Alongside fellow Canadian superstar Kaytranada their Perth show had people desperate for entry! With the show selling out long before the date, fans desperately trawled the Facebook event page in the hope that some kind soul would sell their sought-after ticket(s). With people offering to pay hundreds for a single ticket, they were either hardcore fans or just scenesters who wanted to be at the gig because their friends and friends of friends would be.
On the night, party-goers lined up in the rain and waited at The Bakery's entrance. At this point let's hope they were true fans and not just waiting in the heavy-arse rain in order to be seen. Opening the show, local DJ/producer Starks stuck to his comfort zone and played a set consisting of mostly footwork. This may have been Starks' last Perth gig as he soon moves to Barcelona to follow his dreams. Good luck to him! Kit Pop was next to take the stage. Banging out a solid one-hour set, the DJ/producer/all 'round talented dude kept the crowd engaged. We heard from his partner in crime Ta-ku, Tony Yayo and Lex Luger among others. A Kit Pop set is always killer.
By the time Ryan Hemsworth began his set the venue was full to the brim. Exuding cool vibes, Hemsworth played from his own back catalogue as well as other artists', such as Ginuwine, Lana Del Rey, A$AP Ferg and Future, during his hour-long set. Sticking mostly to hip hop seemed to please his adorning fans. Not playing his famed remix of Frank Ocean's Thinkin Bout You seemed odd considering a heavy portion of Hemsworth's set comprised secondarily (to hip hop) remixed R&B love songs but the dude still knew how to rock his crowd in the best possible way. Closing with his remix of Grimes' Genesis Hemsworth left things pretty open for Kaytranada.
It was hard to even notice the changeover between the two as Kaytranada began his set which was, again, heavily infused with hip hop and R&B. Playing until close, Kaytranada threw down some De La Soul, Schoolboy Q, Missy Elliot, Outkast, Bel Biv Devoe and of course those famous Teedra Moses and Janet Jackson remixes, which were crowd favourites. Playing out the night with trap, Kaytranada catered to all. It may be too soon to call it but this has to have been one of the biggest/best gigs of 2013. At least so far. Big ups to Next Hype for putting it on.
