A solid performance and maximum respect for pulling off so many slow songs on a bustling Saturday night in Sydney.

City & Colour’s rendition of The Girl encapsulated the entire night, showcasing the raw, incomprehensible talent in Green’s vocals and the pulsing energy the band perform with – it was better than Christmas morning.

The expected encore is a treat, and ends with the crowd singing together, “do you understand what you feel inside?” What a fitting sentiment on which to end the night.

While Grigg’s Dylanesque chewing of lyrics softens the otherwise blazingly confident delivery, it’s not enough to undo a pithy set from a great band in an interesting locale.

It’s not hard to understand the excitement here; the melodies are tight, the vibe is exciting and there’s room within the track for each band member to shine. While this tune has been a long time coming, it’s definitely proven worth the wait.

The set finished with a triumphant triple play of Slack MF, Hyper Enough and Precision Auto, which is more than any fan could have asked for.

Melting big brass and hip hop is such a god damn good idea, and they boys know how to do it well.
