More AC/DC More AC/DC

As rock and roll fans prepare for the Australian return of AC/DC, Melbourne’s Federation Square is calling on keen bagpipers across the country to show off their skills this November and, hopefully, smash the record for the largest-ever bagpipe ensemble.

The Great Melbourne Bagpipe Bash event, held at Federation Square on Wednesday, 12 November, will host pipers of all ages and abilities as they honour AC/DC’s classic hit, It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll), as well as its iconic music video.

Released in 1976, the original music video was filmed in Melbourne’s CBD—specifically on Swanston Street—for Countdown. Frontman Bon Scott played the bagpipes alongside three members of the Rats Of Tobruk Pipe Band on the back of a flatbed truck, with the music video and bagpipes resonating with fans across generations.

The Great Melbourne Bagpipe Bash event, presented in partnership with Fed Square, the City of Melbourne, and ABC Radio Melbourne, aims to break the long-standing world record of 333 pipers, who gathered in Bulgaria in 2012 and played the bagpipes in harmony.

If you’re keen to participate, register here. Pipers are encouraged to arrive by 4:30 pm on Wednesday, 12 November, for a 5:10 pm performance. The cost, if you want to participate or see the record broken? Free.

“Melbourne, grab your mates and dust off those bagpipes – we’ve got a world record to break at Fed Square this November,” said Melbourne Lord Mayor Nick Reece. “It’s the first of our celebrations marking the band’s long-awaited return to Melbourne – and it’s going to be dynamite.”

Katrina Sedgwick OAM, Director & CEO of MAP Co, added, “Hundreds of bagpipers playing an AC/DC classic in the heart of the city feels like the perfect Melbourne moment. It’s a celebration of our music legacy and creative spirit that continues to define our city.

“Fed Square has always been the place where Melbourne comes together to celebrate its music, culture and community – and this will be one for the ages.”

AC/DC return to Australia for the first time in a decade this November and December, headlining stadiums across the country with special guests Amyl And The Sniffers. Upon the tour’s announcement, the band broke Ticketek’s record after selling 320,000 tickets in just one day.

With that, AC/DC marked the biggest concert on-sale day of Ticketek’s 40-year history. Additionally, the band surpassed their previous record from 2009.
