Perth synth-metal band Voyager have shared some news with fans: an update on vocalist Danny Estrin’s experience with cancer, new music, and when they’ll next play live.

Addressing fans via Instagram last night (11 December), Estrin discussed his ongoing experience with cancer.

“Some things are good, some things are bad,” he admitted. “The last couple of months have not been great, unfortunately. The cancer is a nasty one.

“It’s kind of spreading its tendrils around my system, which is not ideal. But new medications, new medicine, new chemotherapy, that continues.”

He went on to lament just how long he’s been dealing with cancer, over a year now.

While the video could have been completely devastating, Voyager delivered the message with kindness and hope. They also hinted at new music on the way and mentioned an upcoming live show.

“I’m not letting it stop us from doing stuff; we have been in the studio recording two amazing songs,” Estrin said. “We’ve also decided, ‘Let’s play live’ because we really miss it.”

As previously reported by The Music, Voyager will perform with the Perth Symphony Orchestra’s INNEKA at the Rugby 7s tournament in Perth on Saturday, 25 January.

Last September, Estrin revealed that he’d been diagnosed with a form of cancer that required immediate treatment, which resulted in the band postponing their European tour. The news arrived after a massive year that included representing Australia at Eurovision and releasing their eighth album, Fearless In Love.

In March, the band cancelled all their tour dates for 2024, including their Australian tour, as Estrin continued his treatment.

Upon cancelling their tour dates, Estrin told fans, “The good news is that the wonderful team of oncologists and nurses have been doing such a fantastic job that the cancer is shrinking, which is awesome because there’s nothing worse than you feeling like crap and it doing nothing.”

While Estrin’s cancer treatment is “going in the right direction”, touring has been impossible due to such intense treatment.

“Touring in the way that we know it is probably not possible in the foreseeable future,” the frontman said. “That’s really, really hard to say. Most of the things that we had planned for 2024 in terms of touring will not be able to do.”

Reviewing their most recent Brisbane show for The Music, Carley Hall praised Voyager for living up to the extra hype brought on by the band’s appearance at Eurovision. Hall wrote:

If there were ever any suspicions about whether this band’s bark was bigger than its bite, they’re quickly quashed. Voyager has spent half its lifetime as a band with members coming and going around its mainstay Estrin; the Voyager that we see now on stage have had 10-plus years of playing together – and you can hear and see it in action.
