Canadian punk rockers Sum 41 cancelled their Good Things Festival sideshow in Brisbane yesterday (4 December) after frontman Deryck Whibley was diagnosed with pneumonia.
The show, which was set to be held at the Fortitude Music Hall, was announced as being cancelled in the afternoon, with the venue sharing a statement from the band on social media. Sum 41’s statement read:
Unfortunately, we have to make the difficult decision to cancel tonight’s show in Brisbane due to Deryck being diagnosed with pneumonia. He is receiving the best possible local care and we are working with the promoter to make sure all ticket buyers for tonight’s show are refunded and will let you know more soon. - Sum 41
At this stage, Sum 41 are slated to perform at Good Things Festival in Melbourne tomorrow (6 December), Sydney on Saturday (7 December), and Brisbane on Sunday (8 December).
Next week, they’re set to travel to Adelaide for another sideshow at the AEC Theatre (Tuesday, 10 December), followed by shows at Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena (Thursday, 12 December) and Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion (Saturday, 14 December). Yesterday, it was announced that Sydney alt-metal outfit RedHook would open the show at the Hordern Pavilion.

While yesterday’s sideshow was cancelled, it wasn’t all bad news, as the band’s special guest, grandson, hosted a free show at the Outpost Bar. Sum 41’s Frank Zummo played a DJ set before the American singer-songwriter took to the stage.
Sum 41 have released eight studio albums, with this year’s Heaven :x: Hell serving as their last. A global farewell tour is in the works. For Good Things, their set has been described as the Tour of the Setting Sum.
The band’s farewell tour will wrap up in Toronto on Thursday, 30 January, though their final appearance will take place at the JUNO Awards on Sunday, 30 March, when they receive their well-deserved induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
