Following months of speculation, Slipknot have officially sold a majority stake in their discography to HarbourView Equity Partners.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the deal had gone ahead on Tuesday (18 November), including recorded and publishing royalties. Exact figures weren’t reported; however, in August, Billboard noted that Slipknot’s majority stake is approximately worth $120 million ($183 million AUD).

Slipknot formed in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1995 by percussionist Shawn ClownCrahan, former vocalist Anders Colsefni and bassist Paul Gray. For over a decade, the heavy metal icons sported their best-known line-up, a nine-piece band starring Crahan, Gray, Joey Jordison, Craig Jones, Mick Thomson, Corey Taylor, Sid Wilson, Chris Fehn, and Jim Root. Crahan is the band’s sole original member, following Colsefni's replacement by Taylor and Gray’s tragic passing in 2010.

The American metal group rapidly rose to fame after releasing their self-titled debut album in 1999; their 2001 follow-up, Iowa, received significant critical acclaim and increased their popularity.

To date, Slipknot have released seven albums, one demo, and one EP. They’ve topped charts in the US and the UK and taken home a Grammy Award. In addition to their touring and success, the band have inspired countless artists, including Deafheaven, Code Orange, Sleep Token, Knocked Loose, Bad Omens, Loathe, and many others.

“After 25 years of taking on the music business, we find ourselves with a partner that is willing to sign onto continuing what Slipknot started,” Crahan said. “Only they want to go even bigger. Get ready. Hail The Knot.”

Sherrese Clarke, Founder and CEO of HarbourView Equity Partners, added, “Slipknot’s music has redefined heavy metal and created a global cultural phenomenon. Their catalogue is a testament to their influence, passion, and enduring artistry within the genre.

“We pride ourselves on having our finger on the pulse of culture, and with thorough analysis of audience engagement, we clearly see the cultural impact of Slipknot from the 1990s to present.”

Clarke continued, “The enduring and relevant proof points with Slipknot remain core to our investing thesis, and HarbourView is honoured to help preserve and amplify the group’s work for decades and generations to come.”

Slipknot headlined their titular festival, Knotfest, for the second time in Australia earlier this year. They brought extended set times to Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth, and played a sideshow at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

At Knotfest Melbourne, Slipknot unveiled the live debut of the fan-favourite Gematria (The Killing Name) from the band’s 2008 album, All Hope Is Gone.
