Madonna has taken aim at dance floor naysayers, perhaps even Charli xcx, by saying that dance music is not “dead.”

Charli xcx entered a new era earlier this month with a new track called ROCK MUSIC, capturing the vibe and sounds of the 2000s indie sleaze era, particularly in the music video.

The Brat star teased her surprise musical turn in an interview with British Vogue, where she cited one of the lyrics from her new song: “I think the dance floor is dead, so now we’re making rock music.”

She added, “If I’d made another album that felt more dance-leaning, it would have felt really hard, really sad. What’s interesting for me is to bend the possibilities of what my perspective on that could be.”

It seems that Madonna has an issue with the statement surrounding “dead” dancefloors.

Taking to Instagram this week, wearing a glam outfit including a jacket with a fur-lined collar, shiny boots on the dance floor, and bright pink gloves, Madonna declared that dance and pop music are alive and well.

“If your Dance floor feels dead,” she wrote, “Maybe you’re playing the wrong music.”

Madonna is preparing to release her forthcoming album, Confessions II, this July via Warner Records.

The new album is the continuation of its beloved counterpart, Confessions on a Dance Floor, which dropped 20 years ago.

The original album features the hit single Hung Up, which topped the charts in 41 countries. With an iconic sample of ABBA’s Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight), Hung Up preceded the release of subsequent singles Sorry, Get Together, and Jump.

At the 2007 Grammy Awards, Madonna took home the win for Best Electronic/Dance Album with Confessions on a Dance Floor.

Madonna summarises her upcoming sequel album release by quoting the first few lines of her song, One Step Away: “People think that dance music is superficial, but they’ve got it all wrong. The dance floor is not just a place, it’s a threshold: A ritualistic space where movement replaces language.”

Since she announced the album last month, Madonna has released the singles I Feel So Free and Bring Your Love, the latter featuring Sabrina Carpenter. The pair debuted the track during Carpenter’s headline performance at Coachella weekend two.
