Kate Miller-HeidkeBrisbane singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke is heading to Tel Aviv this May to represent Australia at Eurovision 2019 after winning the inaugural Eurovision - Australia Decides competition.
Australia’s 2019 entry was decided by a panel of experts and public voting, with Miller-Heidke beating nine other contestants with her single, Zero Gravity.
Miller-Heidke scored 135 points overall, 87 from the Australian public and 48 from a jury of industry experts, while Electric Fields came in second place with 2000 & Whatever being awarded 114 points and Sheppard landed in third place with On My Way taking out 87 points.
“I’m totally overwhelmed! This has been a peak experience already, and I’m dying with excitement at what’s to come,” Miller-Heidke said.
“Thanks to everyone who voted, and to all the other artists who provided such a brilliant, eclectic and stiff competition.
“I’ve had a ball, and I’m so grateful and thrilled that I get to represent Australia at Eurovision in 2019.”
Broadcasted live by SBS, all ten contestants performed their entry song at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre last night, with Mark Vincent, Courtney Act, Aydan, Leea Nanos, Ella Hooper, Tania Doko and Alfie Arcuri also vying for the opportunity to represent Australia.
Eurovision – Australia Decides creative director Paul Clarke described Australia’s 2019 entry as “a win for out of the box brilliance, which Eurovision devours”.
“It’s a standout song with mesmerising staging. Kate is a total original and Eurovision will love her,” Clarke said.
“Electric Fields delivered a stellar performance, and came so close, but it was Kate’s night. I want to thank all the artists who made the first ever selection show a spectacular success and all the fans who got behind them. The road to Eurovision 2019 has begun!”
Previous Australian contestants include Guy Sebastian, Dami Im, Isaiah Firebrace and Jessica Mauboy.
The Eurovision semi-finals will be held on May 14 and 16 before the grand final on May 18.
