The Tamworth Country Music Festival was hot on its heels, though
The multi-award-winning annual pilgrimage of Byron Bay Bluesfest has added to its already-stacked trophy cabinet by taking out the Gold prize in the field of Major Festivals & Events at this year's NSW Tourism Awards for the second consecutive year.
The five-day camping festival won the category ahead of two-time Silver recipient Tamworth Country Music Festival and this year's Bronze placer, Hunter Valley Steamfest — its fourth victory at the awards, all up. The victory comes hot on the heels of the festival's fifth straight nomination in the US-based Pollstar industry awards.
"Can't believe we’ve won Gold twice in a row; this is now our fourth gold win," Bluesfest director Peter Noble marveled in a statement. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank the incredible team at Bluesfest for their dedication; that truly is what makes Bluesfest the event that so many are compared by.
"It is only a couple of weeks since we were nominated in the US Pollstar Awards for the world’s best international music festival, for the fifth year in a row. Yet, to me, winning this award in our home state for the fourth time is something that is both humbling whilst at the same time exhilarating. We are simply over the moon today as this sinks in."

Smaller events were also acknowledged among the ceremony's many categories, with country NSW's Parkes Elvis Festival claiming the Gold in the Festivals & Events bracket, bettering its Bronze result from 2015 and outplacing the region's Boggabri Drovers Campfire (Silver) and the Murray mecca of the Deni Ute Muster, which earned this year's third place.
Bluesfest, Parkes Elvis Festival and fellow winners will now progress to nationally aligned categories at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards being held in Darwin on 24 February.
Other major Gold recipients from last night's NSW state awards include BridgeClimb Sydney (Major Tourist Attractions), Taronga Western Plains Zoo (Tourist Attractions), Byron Bay Eco Cruises & Kayaks (Ecotourism), Nundle Woollen Mill (Cultural Tourism) and more.
