Perth rock outfit Birds Of Tokyo have scored their first ARIA Album Chart number one with their new album March Fires debuting in top spot this week.

Previously, the band's 2008 album Universes peaked at three and 2010's Birds Of Tokyo managed two. The band were expected to be in the hunt for a strong spot and held off recent visitor Ed Sheeran's +, which rose from six to two. March Fires' lead single Lanterns has given then their highest point in the ARIA Singles Chart as well, peaking at three previously.

Last week's number one Hillsong United's Zion dropped to nine, while the week before that's chart topper Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' Push The Sky Away is now at six. Birds Of Tokyo are the third local act in succession to top the chart – a feat that hasn't happened since 2007 when John Butler Trio's Grand National, Silverchair's Young Modern and missy Higgins' On A Clear Night, followed each other at number one.

The next highest debut in the Albums Chart this week was the returning Dido, whose Girl Who Got Away came in at 12. The Drones' I See Seaweed managed 18, Imagine Dragons' Night Visions 28 and Stereophonics's Graffiti On The Train 42.
