Ben Jorgensen had it all. The band that he created and fronted, Armor For Sleep, was a staple in a scene that went from existing solely in the form of basement shows to selling out the worlds biggest arena's in a short matter of time. Along with bands like My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy, AFS helped carry the torch for the underground "emo" scene, which exploded into the mainstream and eventually consumed itself under its own weight. With the release of two albums on an independent label and one on a major, AFS managed to sell over 350,000 albums in the U.S. alone. Their second album "What To Do When You Are Dead", a concept album about a post-suicidal heartbroken ghost (of sorts), was critically acclaimed and the band was cited by the author Stephanie Meyer in the acknowledgments section of her book "New Moon" as being an influence on her during the writing process, among others.
And then in 2008, after spending a summer opening up for Linkin Park, the lights went out. "I just saw our trajectory and I knew there were no more Armor For Sleep songs left for me to write". Ben pulled the plug on the band and took time off from doing anything serious in music. "I was burned out by the grind. It became this rinse and repeat cycle, and it wasn't exciting anymore." Ben worked briefly with some friends doing homage to early lo-fi industrial/electro called God Loves a Challenge, but that never crawled its way out of the studio.
Then in October 2010, Ben announced that he had recorded a solo EP entitled "There Is Nowhere Left To Go" and would be releasing it on iTunes and digitally across the world on October 5th. The EP charted at #4 on the iTunes singer/songwriter chart and the single "Changed My Mind" climbed to #1 on the purevolume.com listeners’ chart. The sound of the EP is remnant of early Coldplay, Duncan Sheik, and Elliot Smith. There is no blasting distorted guitar. There is no heavy breakdown. There will be no mosh pits this time around. "I just had to write these songs in this way. It feels right to me. What I want and need to communicate is through this sound".
Ben Jorgensen will be visiting our shores for the first time in January 2011, with a set comprising of Armor For Sleep classics as well as showcasing new tracks from his solo project, which is sure to delight fans. Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity. “ There Is Nowhere Left To Go” available on iTunes now.
