We’re just a few weeks away from this year’s APRA Music Awards, and today, the organisation has revealed some exciting updates ahead of the 2025 event.
For the second year in a row, The Presets’ Julian Hamilton will return as the awards’ Music Director.
No stranger to the APRA Music Awards, Hamilton and Silverchair’s Daniel Johns won the Song of the Year award for Straight Lines in 2008. He also won the coveted Songwriter of the Year award in 2009 with The Presets’ bandmate, Kim Moyes.
This year, he’ll curate the live performances at the awards, combining collaborators with the five Peer-Voted APRA Song of the Year nominees.
The 2025 awards mark the return of the International Recognition Award, which will go to songwriters who predominantly live overseas and have achieved significant international success.
Previously named the Overseas Recognition Award, past winners include Jed Kurzel, Kylie Sackley, Lindsay Rimes, and Phil Barton.

Jenny Morris, Chair of APRA, said of the return of the award: “Australian artists are having huge success internationally and making their mark on the world stage, but here at home, they often get overlooked for airplay on commercial radio or streaming services.
“We hope that this new award goes some way to acknowledging the incredible success of these stellar music creators and highlighting the impact their music is having on this important industry stage.”
In addition to announcing the return of Hamilton and the International Recognition Award, APRA has revealed this year’s awards hosts.
Award-winning presenter and journalist Zan Rowe, who you know for her Take 5 podcast and ABC series, will co-host the event with hip-hop artist and Double J presenter Hau Lātūkefu, and R&B singer-songwriter Ngaiire. More presenters will be announced soon.
APRA will reveal the nominees for all award categories on Wednesday, 2 April, while the winners will be announced at an award ceremony at Melbourne Town Hall on Wednesday, 30 April.
Last year’s APRA Music Awards saw Troye Sivan, Sia, and The Teskey Brothers take home the biggest awards, and the introduction of the Most Performed Hard Rock/Heavy Metal and Emerging Songwriter Of The Year award categories.
