SINGLE PREMIERE: Baskervillain - Naivety

13 March 2017 | 12:39 pm | Staff Writer

Brisbane psych-rock quintet Baskervillain aren't wasting any time in following up their recent singles It's A Love and No — which only landed in December — with a new typically multi-layered jam in new cut Naivety.

Proudly premiering on theMusic.com.au today, the track rides a slow-burn intro of atmospheric guitar and emotive vocals from frontman Tom Spurgin to open up with urgent, snappy, snare-driven drums before the current fully pulls band and listener alike along for the ride.

Floating effects and undulating soundscapes build the intrigue throughout as different elements peek their heads above the surface to take central focus, but ultimately this is a song built on swirling riffs, ethereal voices and and frantic percussion, all of which collapse on top of each other during the song's climactic final minute. It's top stuff.

Naivety is the first taste of what's to come in the studio (but the last for a little while) from Baskervillain this year, with the band set to take a break from live performance to record their next release — a successor to 2015's EP Modern Lows — in the near future.

Luckily, they've whittled out quite the tune with Naivety, so you shouldn't have any issues giving it several replays along with last year's acclaimed efforts (It's A Love made it to #22 on Spotify's Viral Top 50 chart, and its launch show sold out The Foundry in Brisbane) to help you pass the time.
