Kisschasy’s Darren Cordeux Finds His Way Home On ‘The Terrors Of Comfort’

BIGSOUND 2019 Artist Focus: SUPEREGO

What you need to know about your BIGSOUND artists.

Answered by: Rhys Hussey – producer

Give us a short description of your music: It's a mix of smooth jazz boom-bap with R&B vocals  juxtaposed with distorted electric synths, glitched-out drumming and a raging, bit-crushed sax solo, then back to R&B. It's pretty different.

Which acts are on your must-see list at BIGSOUND? Raj Mahal, Savage The Girl, Electric Fields, 3K, Lil Spacely, P-UniQue, Party Dozen (absolutely amazing!) and Tobacco Rat.

Why should people come and see you among the many amazing bands at BIGSOUND? The live show is ridiculous. Seriously. It's kinda what we're known for and what sent us from local act to national act. Our live show is like theatre. There is an evident emotional flow – a soaring rise and fall through the entire performance.

What music trends do you think are dominating right now, and do you have any predictions for the coming year? We love trap, but trap has peaked and is on the decline. It won't be dead in a year though. We think that the rock/rap scene will come back full force – I'm talking Rage Against The Machine, Korn, Limp Bizkit, etc. Rappers are trying to be Tame Impala these days, haha.

In your career to date, what have been the key watershed moments? Supporting Midnight Oil. Hanging out with Kamasi Washington and Thundercat and Lianne la Havas at WOMADelaide. Becoming friends with Remi and Sampa The Great (haha). Supporting Blackalicious. Working with David Kennedy (Tribe Called Quest). I don't know, there are a few incredible moments!

What industry lessons would you like to take away from the BIGSOUND conference? How to balance between the music industry and music creation. We found that industry can creep into creativity. We want to learn how to keep that in check. It sometimes can adjust your honest creative process and turn your music into a formulated track that you're not proud of.

What do you identify as the most pressing issue impacting the Australian music industry at present? We have no comment on that right now.

What is the best bit of advice you've been given to prepare for your time at BIGSOUND? Let your inner extrovert come out to play! Have as much fun as possible because BIGSOUND is a celebration of up-and-coming Australian music! Meet as many people as possible, don't be afraid to mingle and smoodge. People want to know who you are!

When and where is your BIGSOUND showcase? 4 Sep, The Brightside, 11.30pm; 5 Sep, Woolly Mammoth Mane Stage, 11.40pm.
