"I had to really take a good look at myself and remind myself that no matter where I am and who I work with, I’ll always be Becca Hatch."

More Becca Hatch More Becca Hatch

In a short span of time, Becca Hatch has become one of Australia's most exciting artists in the worlds of contemporary R&B and pop music. The Kamilaroi/Samoan artist has been on the radar of many since 2017 and since has since caught the ear of music fans across the country with her unique style of R&B which is driven by versatility and diversity, both sonically and lyrically.

While early on she became known for her prominence in the world of soul and R&B, Hatch has recently been focussing on the worlds of dance music, inspired by the worlds of disco, club and pop spheres. Earlier this year she released Without You and expanded that sonic imprint with recent track Blessed, which she details below:

Since the start of the year I’ve found myself diving into a lot of dance music, specifically a lot of house and disco. Around the making of Blessed, I was really diving into artists like Moloko and Kylie Minogue; I feel like you can really hear this in the track. More recently, I feel quite inspired by life and the nights I’ve had out with friends dancing. Not only the events of what happens those nights, but also the overall feeling of being amongst friends and the music that we move to. Shows like Boiler Room and artists like Peggy Gou, Pinkpantheress, and Yaeji have been really inspiring me as well.  I’ve tried to really challenge and push myself this year with some of the new music I’ve been making; trying out different deliveries, sounds and genres. I’m covering a lot of unexplored territory and I think some of it’s my best music as of yet.

Blessed overall is a song about self-celebration and taking back control. It was inspired by a situation I was in prior to writing Blessed, where I spent a lot of time relying on and placing a lot of my worth as an artist into people around me. I thought my identity and success as an artist was tied to what other people and producers thought about me. Then eventually when these relationships ended, I found myself in a hard place where I was forced to reevaluate my surroundings and my sense of self. I had to really take a good look at myself and remind myself that no matter where I am and who I work with, I’ll always be Becca Hatch. After a period where I felt lost and unable to be creative without those people, at the start of the year I got in the studio with Tentendo, KIAN, and Blush’ko and that’s how Blessed was born. Writing Blessed really helped me regain my confidence as an artist and a person.

With each single I’ve put out I feel like I’m becoming more sure of myself and my craft. I’ve realised that it’s okay to be different, to be weird and expressive, what’s really important to me is that I’m telling an authentic story about what I’m learning about myself. I try to reflect that message across not just my music, but in how I communicate with my community over social media and online as well.
