'I Wanted My Album To Feel Bigger Than Just Music': Charley On 'The Chronicles Of A Serial Idealist'

Album Focus: Glasfrosch

"There're some dark themes on this record, some romantic musings about astronomy, and some lullabies."

Album title? Nocturnes

Where did the title of your new album come from? Nocturnes is an album of night music, the dark reflection to our 2013 album of optimistic morning music, Aubades. They're available as downloads online separately, but packaged together as a double CD set.

How many releases do you have now? This is our third full-length album.

How long did it take to write/record? We worked on the creative stuff and tracking of Nocturnes all through 2014. It was a really immersive but efficient process. The mix phase took much longer to translate this time though.

Was anything in particular inspiring you during the making? It's more about doing the work than any specific moment or object of inspiration. There were initial seeds, things like Twin Peaks, Carl Sagan, minimalism, Messiaen, but then we knuckled down and processed it.

What's your favourite song on it? There're some dark themes on this record, some romantic musings about astronomy, and some lullabies. I like the instrumental track.

Will you do anything differently next time? We aim to do things differently every time. Moving forward we're exploring ways to be looser with form and tighter with technology.

When and where is your launch/next gig? We're launching Nocturnes at Howler on 6 Aug. Miles Cosmo, The Spheres and Origami are supporting. We'll have copies of the double album available for purchase on the night.
