Five minutes with Jerome Pride.
Name and role? Jerome Pride – director/producer
Plug your show! Why can't we miss it?
This is the least known, most underrated, and, in my opinion, by far the best of Matt Cameron's plays. It has literally just been published by Currency press. It won the prestigious British award for best foreign play from 500 plays.
Where did the idea for your show come from, how has it evolved?
It evolved from my participation in its two previous incarnations... At La Mama in '97, and with Griffin theatre at the stables in '99. I was the only cast member to play in both productions. We received great critical acclaim on both occasions.
What have the past few months or so been like in the lead-up to Fringe?
The last couple of months have been about pulling together the best young cast I could find in Sydney, and giving them the chance to perform in this great piece. We have been rehearsing at the Sydney Theatre School, where I teach and direct.
What inspires you artistically?
Courage and honesty. Having the courage to display one's art without fear. Self expression that is open and powerful and free. Creating one's own style.
What the most cringe-worthy thing you've seen on stage?
I don't know, sooo many; but a tragic Lear at the Malthouse once being told to 'Get off' by a drunken critic, sitting next to me was pretty funny!
What other shows are you looking forward to at this year's Fringe?
Don't know much about other shows – Let me know!
What excites you about being involved in the Sydney Fringe 2012?
The Fringe is really at the cutting edge of what's happening artistically in Sydney right now – need I say more?
