Australian music photographer Kane Hibberd has announced that Scale, his life-size guitar portrait series, will be showcased in London later this year.

From 12 June to 31 August, Scale will present the intimate relationship between artist and instrument. The exhibition features life-size portraits of 100 world-famous guitars and shares stories of their journeys in musical history.

Guitars featured include Paul McCartney’s iconic Höfner bass, Tom Morello’s 1987 Mongrel custom, Dave Grohl’s Gibson Trini Lopez, Ed Sheeran’s loop-pedal acoustic guitar, and Joan Jett’s Melody Maker. Of course, Hibberd also showcases guitars from Australian and New Zealand artists, such as Keith Urban’s Fender Broadcaster and Kevin Parker’s Rickenbacker.

Fans of guitar-led music will see high-detail photographs of the music world’s most iconic guitars, up close like never before.

Per a press release, the London exhibition is merely a “portion” of Hibberd’s enormous, evolving body of work. Once it’s complete, the entirety of the Scale project will be gathered into a high-quality book that will be released in late 2026.

Hibberd’s Scale exhibition has been over a decade in the making. He undertook the ambitious project offline, sharing nothing from it for twelve years in order to create an immersive exhibition.

For twelve years, the photographer travelled the globe and asked legendary guitarists to share the secrets of their favourite instruments; hundreds of artists answered Hibberd’s question.

So, Scale will see each photograph paired with a secret story behind the instrument. The exhibition will take place from 12 June to 31 August 2025 at Unlocked Shoreditch, 118 Curtain Rd, London. You can find more details about the exhibition here.

Kane Hibberd has worked with a who’s who of Australian artists, including Peter Garrett, Northlane, Make Them Suffer, Camp Cope, The Screaming Jets, Karnivool, Missy Higgins, Birds Of Tokyo, and many more. You can check out his work on his website.
