Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks

Azealia Amanda Banks ( ə-ZEE-lee-ə; born May 31, 1991) is an American rapper, singer and songwriter. Raised in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, she began releasing music through Myspace in 2008 before being signed to XL Recordings at age 18. She subsequently signed with Interscope and Polydor Records before separating in 2013. Banks became an independent artist and started her own independent record label, Chaos & Glory Recordings. She later signed to Parlophone and Warner Records before quitting her label in 2023.

Banks's song "212" has been listed as one of the best songs of 2011 and one of the defining songs of the decade by music publications, including Rolling Stone and Billboard. She has since released two mixtapes (Fantasea in 2012 and Slay-Z in 2016), a studio album (Broke with Expensive Taste in 2014), and two extended plays (1991 in 2012 and Icy Colors Change in 2018). In 2017, Banks had her film debut in the musical drama Love Beats Rhymes, portraying the lead character. Banks's works have garnered acclaim from critics, drawing on various sounds including house, rap, pop, electronic music, and avant-garde.

Throughout her career, Banks's social media presence and outspoken views, especially on U.S. politics and race, as well as disputes with other artists, have attracted significant controversy. Complex noted in 2014 that "she gets more attention for her public feuds than she does for her music".

New Music: Azealia Banks - Chasing Time (Emoh Instead & Zebarah)
Emoh returns to the throne with a powerful Azealia Banks remix.. After spending the year pushing What So Not Emoh Instead has returned with a fiery remix of Azealia Banks' Chasing Time with relatively new DJ Zebarah. Having already been remixed by Australian producers Feki and Høwl, this edition of Chasing Time features some deadly drops courtesy of Emoh, mixed with a slight progressive feel courtesy Zebarah. It’s a tidy little remix to top off a massive 2014 for Emoh, seeing him become an international name in dance music. Here’s hoping it's just the start of a massive 2015 for Emoh Instead/What So Not.  Follow Azealia Banks: FACEBOOK Follow Emoh Instead: FACEBOOK Follow ZeBarah: FACEBOOK

New Music: Azealia Banks - Chasing Time (Høwl Remix)
Høwl drops a fiery remix of Azealia Banks' Chasing Time.. Not to be confused with Ta-Ku and Kit Pop's project HWLS, Høwl is Melbourne wunder-kid James Moriarty's (also the same name as the central villain in Sherlock Holmes) moniker where he drops some vicious knick/snare combos that make us think of Sable/Night Cruise. While the young producer has had a short history it's been an inciting one when he dropped a Friday Freebie for us and also featured on the recent Rat Pack #2 Compilation. And now he has remixed Azealia Banks. This guy has our hearts' a flutter. Høwl changes up Chasing Time into a hyper-active, pounding trip. And his traditionally bass-driven focus drifts a little as he tweaks the vocals alongside some glittering synths that give the feeling that the track just recieved an injection of adrenaline. Premiere: Azealia Banks - Chasing Time (Feki Remix)
Brisbane's Feki puts his soulful spin on Azealia Banks' Chasing Time.. We first came across producer Feki a few months ago with his original track Nothing Lasts Forever, itself coming on the back of some killer remixes for GRMM, The Preatures and Kilter. Citing the likes of Ta-ku, Stwo and Carmack as influences, they're on display but with a soulful playfulness that is becoming increasingly unique to the Brisbane producer. His latest effort - a re-work of Azealia Banks' Chasing Time - is another exploration in emotional, chilled future-beats, and it's all kinds of great: Follow Feki: FACEBOOK

Tkay Maidza - U-Huh
World domination is surely imminent.. Following radio-slaying bangers Brontosaurus and Handle My Ego, Tkay Maidza is continuing her killer roll in 2014 with new single U-Huh. Something akin to the stylings of MIA and Azealia Banks (minus the diva bullshit), Tkay has carved a strong-as-fuck name for herself very quickly following some self-assured live shows on the last LV Presents tour, and will no doubt win a buttload of new fans when she takes on Splendour In The Grass this coming weekend. Something about her harder - at times electro -edged take on hip hop tickles me in the right places, and I can't wait to see her dominate the rest of this year and beyond. Follow her on FACEBOOK to watch what will no doubt be a rapid rise to the cream of the Aussie hip hop crop, and enjoy U-Huh below, available digitally via Dew Process from July 21.
