Live Review: The Living End, Palms

11 November 2014 | 8:33 pm | Deborah Jackson

The crowd seemed to know every word of The Living End's nostalgic set.

More The Living End More The Living End

The Living End boys, who are currently in the studio working on album number seven, last night solidified their place as one of Australia’s greatest rock bands.

As the Metro started to fill, Palms opened the show showing raw talent, and a desire to own the stage, but the crowd paid little attention as most of them were there for one reason only: to cause mayhem and watch their idols take them back to 1998.

When Chris Cheney, Scott Owen and Andy Strachan struck their first chord, the crowd erupted. There were drinks and cans and god knows what being thrown around the floor as the crowd pushed and shoved to get closer to the stage.

A lot of the time Cheney didn’t even need to be there vocally, as the sold out crowd took the reins, singing every lyric of every song for him. Second Solution, Roll On and Prisoner Of Society stood out as the songs that sent the crowd into the highest levels of hysteria.

Each of the guys pulled out a few tricks throughout the night, with Owen playing an impressive double bass solo while balancing on top of his instrument. Cheney then did the same, delivering an impressive guitar solo while balanced on Owen’s double bass, and Strachan, who has certainly bulked up over the years with an impressive set of biceps, was just great from start to finish.

For an encore, the guys came out and in tribute to Freddie Mercury played a rendition of We Are The Champions, which the audience sang along to, and then finished with an epic performance of White Noise.
