The band got a big chance to show off during Ants Marching, and the night wrapped up with an incredible rendition of Rapunzel.

It flipped from Spanish to English whenever he felt like it, and flippant, hilarious songs were half-created on the spot. The laughs were real and earned, and the warmth radiating off the stage was so awesome to be a part of.

Over two hours, Badu’s audience is treated to performance, dance, impeccable vocals, comedy, rap plus her amazing backing band. All hail the multi-talented first lady of neo-soul

Badu mentioned several times that she’s worked with her band for years, and it was obvious every time a song stretched out beyond it’s recorded boundaries that there was a deep trust and enjoyment shared on stage.

It was loud and intense, with a whole lot of ups and downs taking the crowd on a pretty epic journey, before the curtains came down on yet another edition of In The Pines. Here’s to next year.

She ends as she began, with a prayer. Ready For Love unites the room and an astonished audience member is invited up to sing, eliciting a spine-tingling belt.
