"...humans need to change their internal perception of the world in order to salvage the planet for future generations."
Canadian academic and environmental activist David Suzuki started off the night's presentation by speaking about the ways in which humans need to change their internal perception of the world in order to salvage the planet for future generations (and why this has become increasingly important).
Author and scientific historian Naomi Oreskes spoke briefly of her 2014 novel titled The Collapse of Western Civilization (a futuristic look at the effects of climate change), and spoke about how we should have "faith" in science. Oreskes also mentioned how scientific theories have evolved throughout history, and how they are ultimately based on what we see and experience.
Aussie global warming activist and environmentalist Tim Flannery rounded up the talk with his input on the world's overpopulation and how he believes it will become stagnant when Earth hits nine billion people by 2050. As our current fertility rate is 2.36, the ideal number we would need to achieve to maintain population numbers is 2.33, adding the human species is the only species that has ever existed that is self regulated. Flannery predicts we should expect to see more electric (and driverless) cars in the next decade, and remains optimistic about our options regarding the future of our planet.
