Live Review: Hoodoo Gurus, You Am I

"How Hoodoo Gurus manage to narrow down a setlist for a back to back sold-out theatre show is mind boggling given the depth of their catalogue."

More Hoodoo Gurus More Hoodoo Gurus

The initial reception to Tim Rogers striking into the opening chords of Junk was lukewarm at best.

You Am I may be Australian rock royalty but they received no favours, an incredibly strange sight given the band were completely on point and bursting with vigour. The quartet refused to back down and pumped some energy into the crowd, stacking their set with the rich riffs of Rumble, Cathy's Clown and Mr Milk, as well as Rogers' razor-sharp wit and banter. Soon enough the wine glasses were traded in for wine bottles, and the band's flair engulfed the floor. With a quick Cheap Trick cover and Berlin Chair, recently rated Double J's best track of the '90s, You Am I once again proved their iconic status in the nation's music scene.

How Hoodoo Gurus manage to narrow down a setlist for a back to back sold-out theatre show is mind boggling given the depth of their catalogue, but the four have certainly mastered it. Despite reaching back more than 30 years for tracks from Stoneage Romeos, their electrifying energy and precision knock out any potential accusations of 'nostalgia act' with an onstage punch that sounds as fresh as ever.

The previous night's show raised a few complaints about low volume on the balcony level, but this show saw no such issues. The dirty, swaggering riff of Dig It Up and pulsing beats of Tojo hit ear-bleed volumes on the floor, further fuelling each fan's desire to scream every lyric as loud as they could.

Anthems such as Bittersweet, Miss Freelove '69 and What's My Scene coupled with the raw, pub rock-style performance would have been enough to end the night on a high alone. Instead, Davey Lane and Tim Rogers returned to the stage for a racy cover of The Ballroom Blitz before special guest and ex-Guru James Baker of The Victims fame saw out the evening with The Troggs' classic I Can't Control Myself for an unforgettable night of rock'n'roll spirit.
