Written by the multitalented, Pulitzer Prize-winning Sam Shepard in 1983, and starring Mark Davis, Rebecca Fortuna, Sam Allen and William Prescott, this modern reimagining of Fool For Love is set in the present day and tells the story of a doomed relationship between American out-of-towners, Eddie and May. The two seem bound together by blood relation, childhood and countless destructive periods in their years together.
As they thrash out their love over whiskey, yelling and screaming, the Old Man, played by Sam Allen, narrates their situation from the perspective of a dejected, charismatic, divinatory, Jewish American sass pot. Allen reminds this scribe of a cross between Allen Ginsberg and Zach Galafianakis. He sits in his chair, chooses his moments perfectly and, addressing one and then the other, makes everyone laugh at the absurdity of what each character is doing and saying.
There is also the earnest, naïve Martin, played by William Prescott, who only ever wants to take May to the movies. He is plain but, comparatively, makes Eddie look like an absolute lunatic, which he kinds of is, in a way, thanks to love.
Rebecca Fortuna plays an empowered May, torn between the nice yet boring Martin and the tumultuous jerk Eddie. Between Mark Davis and Sam Allen, the tie for best performance is hard to decide. It just depends on whether you love the handsome jerk or Ginsberg more.
