Big names in the running.

More Tim Minchin More Tim Minchin

Tim Minchin's acclaimed Groundhog Day musical has surged as one of the leading contenders for this year's Tony Awards, today picking up multiple nominations for the annual live Broadway theatre ceremony.

The Perth-raised comedian, who wrote all of the music and lyrics for the play, has been nominated for Best Original score, while the comedy has been given a further six nods, including Best Musical, Best Actor (Andy Karl) and Best Director (Matthew Warchus).

The news is hugely impressive for the musical, based on the 1993 film starring Bill Murray, given that it only opened on Broadway last month, following its London premiere last year.

Cate Blanchett has also been recognised for this year's Tony Awards, picking up a nomination in the Best Actress In A Leading Role In A Play category for her work in her Broadway debut, The Present.

The Academy Award winning actress is up against a string of A-list talent including Sally Field (The Glass Menagerie) and Laura Linney (Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes).

Fellow Aussie and The Present co-star Richard Roxburgh was unfortunately overlooked.

Meanwhile, US artist Josh Groban has also been nominated for Best Actor In A Musical for his role in Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, which received 12 nominations altogether.
