It’s been many years without them, but this May sees Australian musical icons The Drones reuniting for a pair of highly-anticipated one-off shows.
The shows, dubbed the Platonic Love Jam, are designed as fundraisers “for a dear friend to improve their life circumstances in a time of need”. All of the proceeds from the gigs – less venue hire and ticketing fees – will go directly to the cause.
Taking place across Wednesday, May 28th and Thursday, May 29th at Naarm/Melbourne’s Croxton Bandroom, The Drones will be reuniting for their first shows since 2016 and will find themselves joined by a handful of their close musical friends.
On the 28th, you’ll be able to experience Paul Kelly and Dan Kelly on the bill, with the 29th featuring Cold Chisel’s own Don Walker. The rest of the lineup is the same both nights, featuring The Nation Blue performing some rare shows, Mod Con, and Cease And Desist DJs.

These shows will be the first for The Drones since they embarked on a hiatus after a festival appearance in Berry back in December 2016. The next year, The Drones’ Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin teamed up with Mod Con’s Erica Dunn and High Tension’s Lauren Hammel to form Tropical Fuck Storm, who have released three critically-acclaimed albums since.
In their initial almost-two decade existence, The Drones released six albums, with 2005’s Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of Your Enemies Will Float By winning the inaugural Australian Music Prize.
In 2020, longtime drummer Mike Noga – who performed with the band from 2004 to 2014 – passed away at the age of 42. In 2023, it was announced that Kitschin was undergoing treatment for cancer, though the band returned to touring in 2024.
Tickets to the upcoming Platonic Love Jam shows are on sale now.
