Ex-Australian Idol judge and record company staffer Ian 'Dicko' Dickson has been thrust back into the spotlight this year after his stint on I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, but it's his encounter with another big celebrity that has turned heads this week.
Speaking with Josh Earl on his 100% Hits Volume Pod podcast, Dicko recounted his time working for a label in the UK where he ran into the newly solo Robbie Williams.
"I remember a night out with Robbie and some journalists where Robbie had hired a security guard to follow him and stop him doing drugs," recounted Dickson. "Every time I went to have a piss, Robbie followed me and said 'you got any gear' and then a security guard would appear and look over Robbie's shoulder at me like he was going to kill me. I would go 'er.. no' and it was a really awkward evening with these weird inteactions with him and his security guard in toilets. And the worst thing is, it stopped me from taking any fucking coke all night!".
Discussing whether Robbie's 'wild' period following his exit from Take That, Dicko contradicted Earl when he suggested that Williams was desperate for the acceptance of artists like Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis.
"The reality was that Robbie was accepted as the pop star that all the cool kids loved," explained Dickson. "There was a time where he was in with them. They fell out because they were three big personalities and they ended up hating each other but there was about a six to eight month period where those lads all hung out together and did loads of naughty shit. Frankly, Robbie could do no wrong and there was nobody in the record industry, cool kids or otherwise, bagging Robbie during that time."
It's fair to say that Williams has mellowed over the years, releasing everything from Big Band albums to EDM side projects, but his consistent 'tell it like it is', cheeky approach to both life and his career has made him a favourite here in Australia. Earlier this year, Williams announced an Australian tour.
