"I hope people like it or hate it, or whatever, I hope it makes them feel something other than shame, self-hatred, and loneliness. I think we are all tired of feeling like that.”
Stranger Things star Maya Hawke has released a very 'NSFW' video for her new single Thérèse. Thérèse portrays Maya, who plays Robin in Stranger Things, her brother Levon Hawke, and various others getting down and dirty in the woods.
As risque as that initial description may sound, Thérèse is actually a beautiful piece of art, with Vox Lux director Brady Corbet doing a brilliant job of connecting the song's slow-burning climb from folky acoustic number to full-scale guitar solo-infused climax.
Starting out depicting an intimate, gentle encounter between two characters, the video gradually escalates with more and more characters joining them in an expression of carnal desire. The lover's subsequent discovery and arrest by Police is followed by a defiant, naked, handcuffed, 'walk-of-shame' with Hawke's determined stare into the camera an instantly iconic moment.
Speaking on the video for Thérèse, Hawke shares that Corbet's video treatment perfectly expresses the song's musical, emotive and storytelling intentions.
"Brady saw the video very clearly in his head, but I can’t imagine he could have guessed how well his idea fit with what I wanted to reveal and express about the song, the feeling that loneliness is the worst thing until you realise it’s far superior to the bad company; about how free we are as kids and then as we go through puberty and culture crushes down on us and instead of being ourselves, we start to try and be like everyone else.”
Hawke is conscious that the age-restricted video will likely inspire a bit of controversy, but that fits in perfectly with her vision.
