It Took 'Stranger Things' For Metallica's 'Master Of Puppets' To Finally Chart In Aus

Kate Bush must've made a great 'Deal with God', as her 1985 single Running Up That Hill remains for a fourth week at the singles-sales-summit in Australia.

Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God) is boosted at the top this week by the surge of the TV soundtrack from whence it came, Stranger Things Season 4, which thanks to an expanded edition and the screening of the remainder of season four over the past weeks, sees the set leap from its #45 entry position last week to land at #8 this week. Her track has lost the top spot in England this week (after three weeks), dropping down to #3, while she is again at #2 in New Zealand and logs a fourth week at #1 in Ireland.

The ST4 phenomenon also pulls back in this week the 1986 single for Metallica and Master Of Puppets, used to the same effect as Kate's track for the show's character Eddie Munson when he battled the bats (that's all I am saying, no spoilers). More on that entry lower down in my report, while a third song from the soundtrack in November 1982's #1 single for Musical Youth and Pass The Dutchie (also from the TV series) has re-entered the New Zealand single chart at #36 this week.

Kate's fourth accumulated week at #1 with Hill now becomes her longest stay in the top spot in Australia, surpassing the three consecutive weeks for her first single and #1 Wuthering Heights, while Kate is also the first Solo Female British Singer to log four weeks at the top of the singles chart here since Adele's Easy On Me (two weeks from Oct 25th, 2021 and two more weeks from Nov 29th, 2021) {Dua Lipa's ten accumulated weeks with Elton John was as a guest singer, not as lead vocalist) plus Kate moves up the listing for 'Accumulated Weeks at #1: Singles (1940 to 2022)' from equal 79th to now equal 77th alongside other acts who've racked up seven weeks from two #1s in Ace Of Base, Anthony Callea, Robert Palmer and Justin Timberlake, she is now one of eleven acts to rack up this tally.

The top three singles are all on hold this week, with the current NZ #1 Single for Joji and Glimpse Of Us remaining here at #2 after losing the top spot last week, while the regained #1 Album holder Harry Styles sees his Harry's House lead single a non-mover at #3, with the song As It Was retaking the #1 spot in the US this week (8th overall week).

The only new peaking track within the Top 10 this week is up one spot to #4, Doja Cat's ELVIS movie track Vegas, the song landing one place higher in NZ at #3 (new peak there too), while here the song swaps places with the latest Lizzo track About Damn Time, which dips back down one place to #5, with her fourth studio album Special due out Friday (July 15th).

The second and third (and final) climbing tracks within the Top 10 this week are both the first and second longest running entries within the T10 of all time, with Heat Waves for Glass Animals back up two spots to #6 (74th week within the ten) and back up one spot to #9 is Stay for The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber, scoring a 51st week within the Top 10, and also cracking the one-year chart anniversary of 52 weeks, with the song's only week outside of the ten being on May 30th.

Jack Harlow's First Class is sitting at #2 in America this week, while here is drops down one spot to #7, followed by the second-week-sitting Canadian #1 single for Drake with 21 Savage and Jimmy Cooks, which here declines one place to sit at #8, while the latest entry for Beyonce, the single Break My Soul, also dips one spot, to sit at #10 this week, while it is up to #2 in Ireland and #4 in England.

UP

Both of the Top Gun: Maverick singles jump to new peaks this week, with OneRepublic's entry I Ain't Worried leaping nine places to score a new chart height of #11 (NZ #7), while Lady Gaga's lead single from the film and Hold My Hand takes an eight place leap to land at #29, its first-ever Top 30 appearance.

The next rising tracks are three place climbs to #21 and a new peak of #22 for Ghost by Justin Bieber and Sunroof for Nicky Youre and dazy, while the only Albums Chart entry this week for the new Imagine Dragons album sees their current singles chart entry Enemy (HP-15) rebound six spots to land at #25.

The Killers' Mr. Brightside takes a one step move to #32, after which Adele's Easy on Me climbs for a third week, up three spots to #38. The latest Jax Jones track Where Did You Go? with MNEK is the fifth and final new peak within the Top 50 this week, up two spots to #41, followed by Ed Sheeran and Lil' Baby with 2Step (HP-40), back up four places to #42, while returning to the Top 50 are Benson Boone with In The Stars, up ten spots to #47, and back up five to #48 is Harry Styles' Watermelon Sugar.

DOWN

No songs leave the Top 10 this week, while a heap of single place dips occur within the Top 20 chart region, the only two place drop is for Ed Sheeran's Bad Habits back down two places to #15, while his Shivers dips one spot to #17, and his Camila Cabello duet Bam Bam drops three places to #33.

Harry Styles' third and final Top 50 entry this week is a one place slip to #19 with Late Night Talking, while his tracks Sushi Restaurant and Matilda both leave the Top 50 this week from last week's #38 and #39 respectively. Drake also has three entries within the fifty this week, declining with Massive (21 to #23) on the Future track Wait For U (23 to #26) and a massive thirteen place fall to #40 with Sticky.

Luke Combs' third album Growin' Up is on hold at #2 this week, while the album's latest single The Kind Of Love We Make drops down eight places to land at #30. Post Malone took a one step dip to #13 with I Like You (A Happier Song), while his Roddy Rich duet Cooped Up falls three places to #35. Lil Nas X remains stable at #36 with Industry Baby, while his track That's What I Want declines five spots to #45.

NEW ENTRIES

* #24 - Master of Puppets by Metallica (from Stranger Things Season 4) (Vertigo/Mercury/Universal) makes its first-ever chart appearance in Australia (Kent/AMR or even ARIA) after its use in the second half of season four for the Netflix series Stranger Things, where Eddie Munson is seen playing the track during the scenes in the Upside Down to attract the Demobats. The song was originally issued this past week in 1986 (July 2nd) and it has also landed in the same position in New Zealand this week (its first entry there also), while here in Australia the band's first-ever singles chart appearance was in November 1988 with Harvester of Sorrow' (HP-100, WI-1).

* #9 - Hot Sh*t by Cardi B feat. Ye (aka Kanye West) & Lil' Durk (Atlantic) is now the 20th Top 100 entry in Australia for the American Female Rapper (12 as lead, 8 as guest), with the song coming from an unknown (date or title) second studio album, with Cardi stating that this song was written before her 2020 #1 single WAP, while the track also features the first appearance under his new moniker for Kanye West as 'Ye'.
