Queen Musical 'We Will Rock You' To Return To Australia In 2016

The acclaimed production will once again grace our shores for a national run next year

We Will Rock You, the lauded Ben Elton-penned musical based on the songs of legendary UK rock band Queen, will return to Australian shores next year for a national run of tour dates nearly 13 years after it made its debut Down Under.

Although date and venue details for next year's antipodean sojourn are yet to be revealed, the local production's pedigree is shaping up very nicely indeed, with Elton confirmed as director and veteran theatre-man John Frost AM, of The Gordon Frost Organisation, filling producer duties in assocation with Queen Theatrical Productions, Phil McIntyre Entertainment and Tribeca Theatrical Productions. Plus, you know the songs themselves are reimagined with the highest of blessings, as Queen's own Brian May and Roger Taylor serve as the Helpmann Award-winning musical's music supervisors.

"This show is all about legend," Elton said in a statement. "We take the legend of Queen and create our own fantastical story of young kids battling the mighty corporations who want to suppress their individuality and their love of music. They need a hero who can help them in their struggle, and we have two — the dreamer Galileo and the sassy rock chick Scaramouche."

Melbourne was the first Australian city to receive We Will Rock You, back in 2003, fresh off its premiere performances in London, with Perth, Brisbane and Sydney all seeing the show in 2004. It cleaned up at that year's Helpmann Awards, where it took home five prizes — and Elton seems as enthused about returning to the country as locals were about having the show to begin with.

"Audiences around the world love We Will Rock You because they get the power and energy of the extraordinary music of Queen in a fun rock'n'roll musical, and this is especially true of Australian audiences," Elton said. "I can't wait to bring this magnificent show back to Australia."
