Jordan Gardner has been in prison since December 2015.

A petition has been launched this week, calling on Jordan Gardner to be freed from prison after the Canadian musician was caught trying to smuggle nearly 40 kilograms of cocaine into the country

As Now Toronto noted, the artist, one half of electric duo Ebony, has pleaded guilty and is set to be sentenced in Sydney this Thursday, where he is facing life imprisonment.

However, the newly-launched Change.org petition claims that Gardner was "allegedly badgered and violently threatened" into attempting to transport the drugs and that the offence is "completely out of his character".

"Jordan does not belong in jail and many of us are wondering if anything can be done to help our friend in this horrible and unfortunate situation," the petition reads.

People wishing to sign the petition are encouraged to write character references to the Sydney Downing Centre Local Court magistrate, while a template letter has also been attached.

"Jordan is a man of strong integrity," the template letter reads.

"His level of motivation and willingness to succeed were always of inspiration to those around him. Since he has been away, a great void has been felt in our community for so many who considered him a friend.

"Based on my relationship with Jordan, the events that have led him to this current situation are extremely irregular. As a result I am confident that he has a willingness to come out of this situation with a newly restored and positive outlook on life.

"I believe that he will use the lessons of this ordeal to help others when faced with making their own positive decisions in the future."

The petition currently has over 800 signatures.
