Nick CaveScrolling through the 98th Academy Awards nominations list, there’s a surprising name that appears in the Music (Original Song) category: Nick Cave.
While he’s received plenty of awards and nominations for his music – ARIA Awards, APRA Awards, Music Victoria Awards, nominations for Grammy Awards and the Australian Music Prize – this is his first Oscar nomination.
Nick Cave, along with fellow musician Bryce Dessner of The National fame, have been nominated for an Academy Award for their song Train Dreams, from the film of the same name. The American period drama film stars Australian actor Joel Edgerton, appearing alongside Felicity Jones, Kerry Condon, and others. The song plays at the end credits of the film.
Cave and Dessner are in the Best Original Song category alongside Diane Warren (for Dear Me), Golden from KPop Demon Hunters, Raphael Saadiq and Ludwig Goransson (for Sinners), and Nicholas Pike (Sweet Dreams of Joy).

The 98th Academy Awards winners will be revealed during a ceremony on Sunday, 15 March, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The ceremony should be broadcast in Australia the following day.
Nick Cave has written and co-written films, and has appeared in documentaries and concert films about his music.
His 2009 novel, The Death of Bunny Munro, was recently adapted into a miniseries starring actor Matt Smith, with music by Cave scattered throughout. He received additional mainstream attention when his song, Red Right Hand, served as the intro theme for the hit Netflix series, Peaky Blinders.
Currently touring Australia in support of the latest Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album, Wild God, the band are performing at vast outdoor venues and arenas.
Upon announcing the tour last year, Cave said, “I can’t wait to get to Australia and New Zealand with The Bad Seeds and to bring you our epic Wild God show. It’s been a long time coming, and I’ve missed both Australia and New Zealand very much. It will be a wild and mighty joy.”
