“Woah, my heart! This is crazy."

Yolngu man Baker Boy has won big at the 2020 National Indigenous Music Awards with his single Meditjin.

The rising hip hop star picked up Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Film Clip of the Year during the live-streamed awards ceremony.

“Woah, my heart! This is crazy,” Bakey Boy said.

“I honestly didn’t think I could win at all tonight, but I just want to say to all the nominees tonight across all of the categories; you are incredible, you are amazing and I am so proud of you all, my brothers and sisters.

“To my family back in Darwin across Arnhem Land, I’m so proud to represent my people and so overwhelmed by the support and success I have achieved rapping in Yolgnu Matha and English.”

Australian music legend Archie Roach claimed Album Of The Year for Tell Me Why, while Miiesha was named New Talent of the Year, KDA Crew picked up Community Clip of the Year, Rrawun Maymuru & Nick Wales won the Indigenous Language Award, and JK-47 was victorious in the Triple J Unearthed category.

As announced earlier in the week, Ngarrindjeri woman Ruby Hunter was inducted into the NIMAs Hall Of Fame, awarded the honour posthumously and celebrated during the event by musical tributes from Emma Donovan and her husband, Archie Roach.

The 2020 awards also featured a tribute Warumpi Band’s My Island Home and performances from Thelma Plum, Mambali and more as well as live crosses to Jessica Mauboy, Mitch Tambo, Electric Fields and remote communities in Yirrkala and Broome.

“I’m extremely proud that while 2020 might have presented its challenges, the National Indigenous Music Awards rose above the noise of this difficult time to present an amazing and uplifting night of First Nations artists,” NIMAs Creative Director and host Ben Graetz said.

“The broadcast has brought the community together in a celebration of resilience and talent. Never before has it been more important to recognise our past, present and future and to come together as one.”
