This November, one of the West End’s feel-good comedy musicals, Mrs. Doubtfire, will make its Australian debut.
Based on the classic 1993 film starring Robin Williams and Sally Field, the musical will premiere at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in November. It features unforgettable moments from the film, along with new songs and spectacular dance numbers.
Directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, Mrs. Doubtfire has been performed to sell-out crowds in the West End for nearly two years, as well as a Broadway season and tours across the US, Germany, South Korea, and Brazil.
“Producing MRS. DOUBTFIRE has been an incredible and joyful experience,” commented Producers Kevin McCollum and Jamie Wilson. “This show is heartwarming, hilarious and fun for the whole family, and we're delighted that audiences in Melbourne will now get to embrace everybody’s favourite nanny for themselves.”
Producer Suzanne Jones of JONES Theatrical Group added, “We cannot wait to premiere this new musical in Melbourne at the beautiful Princess Theatre. Melbourne is the home of comedy and MRS. DOUBTFIRE is a hilarious and heartfelt musical that proves we’re better together.”
Additional casting details will be announced in the coming months. Keen performers can find information about auditioning for the musical here.

Like the film, Mrs. Doubtfire focuses on actor Daniel Hillard, who’s out of work but nonetheless committed to his family.

Hillard loses custody of his children in a divorce and, to spend more time with them, creates the alter-ego of the sweet but batty nanny, Euphegenia Doubtfire. However, as his new character develops a life of her own, Hillard learns lessons about what it truly means to be a father.
As well as Mrs. Doubtfire, Jerry Zaks has directed musicals including Hello, Dolly!, Steve Martin’s Meteor Shower, A Bronx Tale, and, most recently, The Music Man, a Broadway production featuring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster.
Zaks has received four Tony Awards and an additional eight nominations. Plus, he’s taken home four Drama Desk Awards, two Outer Critics Circle Awards and an Obie.
Mrs. Doubtfire, the film, was released in 1993. Based on the 1987 novel Madame Doubtfire by Anne Fine, it was the second-highest-grossing film of 1993, behind Jurassic Park.
The movie won the Academy Award for Best Makeup and the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, while Robin Williams took home the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
