We could be seeing a pop icon heading to Australia this year, with rumours circulating that Miley Cyrus is on track to perform at September’s NFL game in Melbourne.

This September, Australia’s first-ever regular season NFL game will take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers going head-to-head on Friday, September 11th.

It’s already shaping up to be a major event on the sporting calendar, and with rising demand for sports and entertainment to mix, it appears the rumour mill is in full flight about who will be performing at the event.

According to The Herald Sun, former AFL footballer turned radio host Brendan Fevola last week ‘confirmed’ that Macy Gray would be the one performing as part of the pre-game entertainment.

Given that Gray’s latest Australian tour does indeed kick off at Hamer Hall in Melbourne on September 11th – walking distance from the MCG – it’s a very believable rumour.

However, the publication’s Page 13 section has since reported that Cyrus is now leading the discussions in regard to who will be entertaining fans and players on the day.

When reached for comment, a spokesperson for the NFL was quite diplomatic in their response. “The NFL is looking forward to putting on a great experience for the upcoming game in Melbourne,” they stated.

“Details of who will be involved in the entertainment have not yet been confirmed but we’re looking to sharing more once we have more.”

If correct, Cyrus’ appearance would be a huge coup. Currently, it’s been 12 years since she last visited Australia, and in the years since, she’s markedly slowed down her touring schedule.

In early 2020, she was confirmed to appear at the World Tour Bushfire Relief charity concert in Melbourne, but was forced to cancel the show in the wake of the then-rising COVID-19 pandemic.

When on-ground in Melbourne in April, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, gave a little tease in regard to the game’s half-time entertainment, explaining that the choice was as vital as the sport itself.

“I think it’s part of our event to have entertainment,” the Sydney Morning Herald reported him as saying. “We come with a show. It’s not just a football game.”

However, he was less than forthcoming when pushed for names that were in contention for the game’s entertainment. “Do you think I am going to tell you that?” he stated. “I think you’ll find it attractive. We’ve got a lot of great possibilities.

“We got a few more suggestions this morning. The premier [Jacinta Allan] had a few. So I think we’ll do a great job of entertaining everybody.”
