"On Sunday 3rd July in a high school gym in New York, Steven Spielberg directed his first music video, in one shot, on his phone. Kate Capshaw was the almighty dolly grip"

Marcus Mumford has confirmed that the music video for his recent single Cannibal was directed by Steven Spielberg.

Cannibal marks the multiple-time Oscar-winning director, producer, and screenwriter's music-video debut.

For a man famous for directing some of the most technologically innovative films of all time, Spielberg took a very simple approach to shoot the video for Cannibal, with Mumford's post revealing that he shot the whole thing in one take on a phone.

The video features Mumford performing the track in a gym, with Spielberg doing a brilliant job of creating a feeling of intimacy and intensity, displaying some of the skills responsible for his two best-director Oscars.

The simplicity of the approach used in Cannibal is a far cry from the big-budget efforts of Spielberg's past such as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, and Indiana Jones.

Mumford shared that he is grateful for Spielberg's efforts.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the support of the people around me to bring this music to you, and I cannot hope to express all of my gratitude. When people get it, it blows my mind. Kate and Steven just got it, and I cannot thank them enough. Thank you, Kate. Thank you, Kristie. Thank you, Steven”

Cannibal appears on Marcus Mumford's upcoming self-titled solo album. The record is available for pre-order now.

Marcus departed Mumford and Sons following the fallout of a controversial tweet. At the time he stated "I could stay and continue to self-censor but it will erode my sense of integrity. Gnaw my conscience. I've already felt that beginning. The only way forward is to leave the band. I hope in distancing myself from them I am able to speak my mind without them suffering the consequences."
